CADET SUMMER READING
In September of the new school year, SMA Prep is excited to announce that author Carl Hiaasen will be visiting our school. In anticipation of this visit, SMA Prep cadets will be required to read one novel from the selection below.  Mr. Hiaasen’s novels focus on environmental issues including ecosystems, conservation, natural resources, biodiversity, and developing an appreciation of our planet. This theme will connect with our school-wide initiative: Project Earth. When students return in the fall, they will explore the theme, plot, and environmental connections embedded within the novel. Visit Amazon.com or your public library to get a book and find out more about Carl Hiaasen.

SUMMER MATH
We are excited to use Khan Academy again for our Summer Math Review! It is important that students stay mentally active during the summer months, and we hope that by using this excellent online application, your child will enjoy working on math and feel good about staying ahead of the summer“brain drain”.

In order to receive credit for summer work, please follow these directions. Parents of new students may need to assist your child with these instructions. You may also set up a parent account to track your child’s progress. Returning students will use their ourSMA.org account to access the summer missions.

3) Begin working on your designated mission! See tips below for working on your mission.

COMPLETE THE MISSION
1) Choose Your Mission: If you have not yet chosen a mission, from your dashboard, choose the mission from the top left of the page using the “Subjects” drop-down menu. If you have more than one mission selected, do one at a time starting with the lower mission.

2) Tracking Mission Progress:
 You can track your mission progress from your dashboard. The graph on the left indicates which skills you have practiced, need practice, struggling, or mastered.
 Select “Show all skills” to see a detailed chart of your progress. Hover over a square in the graph to see your level for a particular skill.

The Goal: To master as many topics in your mission as possible. The percent mastered will become the
record of your summer work. To get mastery, you must practice a topic. Once you get a certain number
correct in a row, you can do a mastery question the next day to gain mastery. If you get the mastery
question wrong, you must wait another day to try again.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SUMMER PROGRESS
1) Do not wait until the last minute!
2) Set a personal goal for percent mastered and work towards that goal. 100% should not
necessarily be the goal for everybody.
3) If you are stuck, use the videos and hints to help you through the topics.
4) You can take mastery quizzes for any topics you have practiced. Practice a bit first and then do
the mastery quiz to jump straight to mastery.
5) Do a little bit each day. The various levels of practice and mastery have timers that require you
to wait before trying again. Do not wait until the last minute!
6) Make sure you work on the same mission to demonstrate progress. (See chart above)
Remember, these are foundation skills for your next level math class.
