SARASOTA, FL. August 24, 2017—Sarasota Military Academy Prep, a public charter, middle school and authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, providing students with a 21st century learning experience immersed in daily military principles of honor, respect, and leadership, announced that the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), has recognized that Sarasota Military Prep in Sarasota, Florida has successfully created a Certified Schoolyard Habitat® through its Garden for Wildlife program. NWF is America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization.
SMA Prep has joined with over 5,000 schools nationwide that have transformed their schoolyards into thriving wildlife habitats that provides essential elements needed by all wildlife – natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young. The habitat also serves as an outdoor education site where students can engage in cross-curricular learning in a hands-on way.
SMA-MAJ Deb Walker, AgriScience educator and SMA Prep Garden founder says she is, “especially pleased with this certification because it is Step One in the long process of becoming an Eco School”. Walker goes on to say that, “Ensuring biodiversity is one of the pathways that we have chosen in order to attain this status, and this award makes it almost a certainty that we will be approved in that area”.
Certification also recognizes the SMA Prep Garden as a Certified Wildlife Habitat® that is part of the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, a national effort to restore critical habitat for pollinators.
“We are excited to have another school join our growing list of more than 5,000 certified Schoolyard Habitats. Kids can now personally experience nature through hands-on learning in an outdoor environment,” said Liz Soper, Director of K-12 Programs for National Wildlife Federation.
SMA Prep is seeking to become a certified Green School through the NWF Eco Schools USA Program in 2017-18.
